Recently the Year 11 and 12 Agriculture classes have attended two important industry conferences. The first was the GRDC Cropping Update at Corowa. We were the only school students in attendance and the students learned from many key speakers from within the grains industry. Topics included: Surviving the Drought; GM crops – how do they fit? ; Nitrogen from legumes; Planning for 2009.
The second excursion was to the Sheep CRC conference and field held at Rutherglen Research Institute. We saw many of the progeny that have been bred in the major sheep genomics project that is the centre piece of the 7 year Sheep CRC project. Speakers covered topics like: Feed Conversion Efficiency; Sire Selection; Breeding for Fly Resistance; SNPs (called snips), which involves finding gene markers for important characteristics and other similar modern topics. The lunch comprised sensational hot lamb rolls served in a Greek salad. The meat was lamb rump and it simply melted in your mouth and was delicious!
